SENNA Movie
The problem with most “Authorised” biographies is that they are authorized and the subjects or their families only want good things said, no dirty laundry in sight.
This documentary followed those guidelines to a great extent and if you want another, but equally skewed perspective you will have to wait for “Prost” or “Mansell” to be produced or read someone else’s biography such as Tommy Byrne (Senna’s rival in his early days.)
Talking about early days the documentary briefly covers Karting but then jumps straight to his first F1 season at Toleman, missing his domination in FF2000 and Formula 3 which brought him to the attention of the Formula 1 Teams. I was lucky enough to see Senna race in several Formula 3 races where he dominated the likes of Martin Brundle, Davy Jones, Calvin Fish and Allen Berg.
The quality of the footage is not good up to and including the 1990 season. I watched 90% of the F1 races in the 80’s on my state of the art 21” Hitachi and remember the quality as being pretty good. Some of this quality is lost due to the increase in screen size to 30’ plus but the ghosting makes it very difficult to watch. After 1990 the quality is a lot better.
Highlightes of the movie are Senna’s interview by an attractive Brazilian TV celebrity who she asks what he wants for Christmas and Selina Scott shooting down a frisky Alan Prost in a BBC interview. Also watch out for the drivers meetings were Senna goes head to head with the hated FIA President Jean Marie Balestre.
Senna was clearly a talented, priviliged but complicated man who thought if he wasn’t winning the other team was cheating and if he couldn’t have the best car it was time to retire.
Overall I would rate the movie a 7/10 and recommend it to race fans from the 80’s and more recent converts who want to learn more about the driver many consider to be the best off all time.
It goes on general release in mid August so check your local independent theatre and you might find it playing. No news on its DVD release but a few weeks before Christmas would be my guess. If you get our regular emails we will let you know as soon as it is announced.
